Scott Lake Station
Final option to build new station presented to County
In the last issue I reported that the fire department has been advised by our architects and engineers (A&E) that the property immediately adjacent to the existing fire station will not meet the new storm water regulations, since that time the A&E have completed additional soils and ground water tests to determine if there is buildable land in the Scott Lake commons area. What the civil engineers found is that the ground water (below the surface) slopes down toward the corner of Scott Creek Drive SW and 114th Way and therefore that location is the most likely to receive County approval. If the Scott Lake Board and residents authorize use of the land for purposes of building a new fire station then plans are to relocate the Baseball field (location on site plan). Scott Lake would be required to complete a boundary line adjustment which would include returning the current station and property to the Scott Lake residents.
Understanding that the only remaining option to build a new fire station in Scott Lake is on the corner of Scott Creek Drive SW and 114th Way, the fire department directed the architect and engineer (A&E) working on the Scott Lake fire station project to develop site plans and attended a pre-submission conference with Thurston County Development Services to present the final option. Implementing the latest design features to address storm water retention, the A&E presented the information to Thurston County and the response was favorable. However, after that meeting, some Scott Lake residents opposed to building a new fire station in that location have raised land use issues with the County, which has caused the project to be on hold until the fire department receives authorization of land use from the Scott Lake Board and residents.
The fire department has included the site plan of the new fire station proposal and had the proposed property lines and building staked to help the Scott Lake residents visualize the proposal and determine if this is a viable option. You can also visit our website: www.westthurstonfire.org to see the floor plan and elevation drawings. If authorization to proceed with the option of building a new fire station cannot be attained, the fire department may attempt to remodel the existing station (within the limitation of the regulations and existing square footage) it is uncertain if the County will authorize remodel to the extent necessary to achieve the goal of building a facility to accommodate firefighter’s quarters for purposes of staffing the facility.
