Battalion Chief Ken Carlson retires after 40 years in the fire service.
On November 8, 2010 members of West Thurston Fire gathered to celebrate the retirement of Battalion Chief Ken Carlson and thank him for his dedication to the fire service for more than 40 years.
Carlson has been a volunteer member of West Thurston Fire for 15 years, and was integral in the 2002 merger between Grand Mound Fire and Rochester Fire. Over the past 15 years with the department he managed a multitude of departmental programs.
Carlson thought it was important to see the West Thurston Regional Fire Authority (which was finalized January 2010) to fruition before moving forward with his decision to retire.
At his retirement celebration department members shared stories of Carlson’s friendship, his “weird” sense of humor and strong advocacy for the fire department. Carlson was presented with an award and his helmet as a token of appreciation from the department.
Chief Robert Scott said of Carlson: "His work and dedication to the community is one that I hope is mirrored by others as a model of public service. I am grateful for his time he has committed to provide a better fire service to my community."
